Which facility is for end-of-life care and support?

Hospice Care

Hospice care is the type of care that focuses on end-of-life support, aiming to keep the patient comfortable and maintain quality of life as illness progresses. It provides comprehensive symptom management (like pain and discomfort), emotional and spiritual support, and assistance for families, delivered by a multidisciplinary team that may include nurses, aides, doctors, social workers, and chaplains. The care can occur at home, in a dedicated hospice facility, or in some hospital settings, with the goal of respecting patient wishes and reducing suffering rather than pursuing curative treatments.

In contrast, a residential care facility is for long-term housing and daily living assistance for people who need help with activities of daily living but aren’t specifically focused on end-of-life care. A subacute care unit offers short-term, intermediate hospital-level care to help patients recover and transition to lower levels of care. Tertiary care involves highly specialized medical services for complex conditions, not specifically geared toward end-of-life support.
